Academic Structure

The Academic Curriculum Breakdown

Understanding the progression of clinical and laboratory disciplines throughout degree completion:

MBBS Academic Progression

4.5 Years + 1 Year CRRI

Phase I (1st Professional - 13 Months)

Human Anatomy: Gross anatomy, cadaveric dissection, histology, embryology, and neuroanatomy.
Physiology: Cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, renal, and endocrine physiology.
Biochemistry: Clinical enzymology, metabolism, and molecular biology.

Phase II (2nd Professional - 13 Months)

Pathology: Cellular injury, systemic pathology, hematology, and clinical autopsy.
Microbiology: Bacteriology, virology, mycology, and infection control protocols.
Pharmacology: Pharmacokinetics, autonomic pharmacology, antimicrobials, and rational drug use.

Phase III (Part 1 & 2 - 28 Months)

Part 1: Forensic Medicine & Toxicology (FMT), Community Medicine (PSM), Ophthalmology, ENT.
Part 2 (Major Clinicals): General Medicine (Cardio, Neuro, Nephro), General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBG), and Pediatrics with daily bedside ward postings.

B.Pharm Semester Progression

4 Years • 8 Standardized Semesters

Years 1 & 2 (Semesters 1 - 4: Scientific Foundations)

Pharmaceutical Analysis: Volumetric titration, spectroscopy, and chromatography.
Pharmaceutics: Liquid dosage forms, suspensions, emulsions, and unit operations.
Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry: Reaction mechanisms, heterocyclic synthesis, and stereochemistry.

Year 3 (Semesters 5 & 6: Pharmacology & Medicinal Chemistry)

Medicinal Chemistry: Structure-Activity Relationships (SAR) and drug design.
Pharmacology: Bioassays, neuropharmacology, and toxicological screening.
Pharmacognosy: Phytochemical extraction, secondary metabolites, and standardization.

Year 4 (Semesters 7 & 8: Industrial & Regulatory Mastery)

Industrial Pharmacy: Tablet compression, coating, sterile injectables, and cGMP compliance.
Regulatory Affairs: US-FDA, CDSCO guidelines, CTD/eCTD dossier filing, and patent law.
Industrial Training: 4 to 6 weeks hands-on internship in a licensed pharma manufacturing facility.

Hands-on Practice

Compulsory Clinical Internships (CRRI)

The 12-month Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship transforms theoretical knowledge into autonomous clinical competence.

2 Months

General Medicine

ICU, CCU, OPD triage & ward management.

2 Months

General Surgery

Emergency trauma, OT assisting, and pre/post-op care.

2 Months

Obstetrics & Gynae

Labor room deliveries, antenatal clinics, and C-sections.

2 Months

Community Health

Primary Health Centers (PHCs) & rural immunization.

Mandatory Internship Logbook & Stipend Guidelines

Interns maintain an officially audited logbook recording procedural skills (intravenous cannulation, Foley catheterization, suturing, Lumbar Puncture assisting, CPR). Under NMC regulations, interns in Government Medical Colleges receive a monthly government stipend ranging between ₹18,000 to ₹30,000/month depending on the state.

Statutory Legal Accreditation

Professional Council Registration & Licensing

A degree alone does not grant practice rights in India. You must secure formal statutory council licenses:

Allopathic Doctors

NMC & State Medical Council (SMC) Registration

1
Provisional Registration: Issued after passing final MBBS exams to permit clinical work during the 1-year internship (CRRI).
2
Internship Completion Certificate: Signed by the Medical Superintendent certifying satisfactory completion of all postings.
3
Permanent Registration Number: Issued by your State Medical Council (e.g. Maharashtra Medical Council - MMC). Legally grants the right to prescribe Scheduled drugs, sign death certificates, and practice modern medicine independently across India.
Pharmacists

PCI & State Pharmacy Council Registration

1
College Approval Verification: Verifying that your degree college held valid Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) approval during your admission batch.
2
Pharmacist Registration Certificate: Issued under Section 32(2) of the Pharmacy Act, 1948 by your State Pharmacy Council (e.g. MSPC).
3
Form 19 & Retail Rights: Grants the legal qualification to operate as a Registered Pharmacist, open a retail/wholesale medical agency, or act as an approved Manufacturing Chemist in a licensed factory.
Regulatory Update

The NEXT Exam Architecture

Comprehensive breakdown of the dual-step national exit examination:

Computer Based Test (CBT)

NEXT Step 1

Taken at the end of Final MBBS Part 2

  • 540 Clinical Vignette MCQs across 3 days (6 papers).
  • Tests clinical problem solving, diagnostics, and rational therapy.
  • Dual Role: Acts as the qualifying exam for starting your CRRI internship AND serves as the nationwide merit score for post-graduate MD/MS seat allotment.
Practical Clinical Examination

NEXT Step 2

Taken after completing the 1-year CRRI internship

  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE / OSPE).
  • Evaluates bedside history taking, physical examination, emergency procedures, and doctor-patient communication.
  • Outcome: Graded strictly as Pass / Fail. Passing is mandatory to receive your permanent license to practice medicine.
